体裁与特殊用途英语(English for Specific Purposes)

特殊用途英语(ESP)领域发端于英语语言教学领域的国际化发展,最初旨在促进英文媒介高校中国际学生的学术写作和非英语国家中研究者的英语论文写作。迄今为止,该领域已发展至包含行业英语(English for occupational purposes)、职业英语(English for vocational purposes)、科技英语(English for science and technology)、医学英语(English for medical purposes)、商业英语(English for business purposes)、 社区身份英语(English for community membership) (Belcher, 2009, 2013; Paltridge & Starfield, 2013)。

ESP起源于语言学研究中对专业文本如科技报道的语法特征分析。随着语言学领域的发展,ESP研究者也逐渐将研究兴趣从句子层面上升至语篇层面,并重视文本中的‘修辞功能’(Trimble, 1985)如描写、叙事、定义、举例、分类、比较与对比、因果和概括。目前,ESP的研究领域已扩展至专业文本语境或体裁中的语言形式和语篇结构。

体裁是如今ESP教学与研究中非常重要的一个概念。很多ESP体裁研究均借鉴Swales (1981, 1990, 2000)的理论,其探索各种类型话语中的语篇结构和语言特征,如科研论文、硕士和博士论文、工作申请信和推销信、法律文件、研讨会、学术讲座、学术会议讨论和大学课程阅读材料 (参考Hyon, 2017; Paltridge, 1997, 2001, 2013, 2014; Hyland, 2004a, 2018, 2019; Swales 1990, 2004)。

ESP研究中的体裁分析

ESP体裁研究中的一个重要模型是CARS模式(即创建研究空间分析模式)。此模式源自Swales的论著(1981, 1990), 其描述了科研论文开篇部分中诸多语步的典型语篇结构。该类研究中的语言描写主要借鉴了所谓的语言教学观(如Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman, 2020)。然而,悉尼学派的体裁分析研究则从系统功能语言观(如Halliday, 1985)出发,采用图式结构(Martin & Rose, 2008)来描写文本的语篇结构。

Swales指出在科研论文中,作者论述其研究的重要性与相关性以此建立研究领域(第一语步: 确定研究领域)。第二语步(设置当前研究地位)为指出前期研究中的空白,即研究者的研究话题,而第三语步(确立当前研究地位)陈述研究目的以及如何填补研究空白。此模式还被应用于其他体裁的文本如学位论文的前言部分(Bunton, 2002; Paltridge, 2020; Paltridge & Starfield, 2020)。Connor的著作《对比修辞》(1996)和《写作课堂中的跨文化修辞》(2011)总结了CARS模式的跨文化差异。

然后,ESP研究中的语篇结构分析不仅局限于学术体裁,其涉及众多专业领域的语篇体裁如公司公开信、申请信、报刊法律报道和科普医学文本。此类研究可参考Bhatia于1993年发表的著作《Analyzing genre: Language use in professional settings》和2004年的著作《Worlds of written discourse: A genre-based view》。Bhatia和其他学者(如Askehave & Swales, 2000; Swales, 2004; Flowerdew, 2002)在特定题材的分析中采用文本优先或者语境优先的方法,即首先分析文本中的典型语言和语篇模式(文本优先方法)或先语境后语言和语篇模式(语境优先方法)。此类文本分析通常没有明确而放之四海皆准的准则,而是取决于研究者的兴趣与研究的总体目标和目的。即该研究者的研究兴趣是文本的语言和语篇特征(文本优先)或文本创作背后的语境(语境优先)。

ESP体裁分析中的写作目的研究吸引了很多关注。Swales在其1990的著作《体裁分析》中指出一篇文本为何种体裁主要取决于沟通目的。之后他修正了此观点,认为体裁或拥有多重目的且对于不同的文本参与者目的也不一样(Askehave & Swales 2001)。同一体裁的文本即使在语言与修辞上类似,也可能“在沟通目的上有着惊人的差异”(Swales & Rogers, 1995, 223页)。体裁的沟通目的也会随着时间不断进化,可能会改变、拓展或者收缩(Swales 2004)。即使类属于同一体裁,不同的文化环境下沟通目的也可能有差异。Bhatia(2004)提出“体裁殖民”,作为沟通目的讨论的延伸;即类似年终报告和可行性报告的体裁文本拥有同样的沟通目的,但在其他方面如学科、职业和使用情景中不同。

ESP体裁研究的未来方向

ESP体裁研究持续关注语境,其采用了Swales(1993)的论述,认为有必要跨域文本的结构和语言层面进行分析从而更好理解体裁的社会和语境特征(深入论述详见Paltridge, Starfield & Tardy, 2016; Paltridge & Wang, 2011)。故ESP中的体裁研究从语言描述发展至探究体裁形成的影响因素和达到特定目标的方法。与此同时,分析也逐渐转为电脑辅助分析(参考Biber & Conrad, 2019; Biber, Connor & Upton, 2009; Flowerdew, 2011; Nesi & Gardner, 2012)。电脑辅助有助于大规模文本的分析,从而使分析结果更具有概括性。Biber关于英语口语与笔语的异同分析对此类研究具有重大影响(参考Biber, 1988, 2002, Biber & Conrad, 2009, Biber et al., 2002)。Biber在其研究中发现了所探究体裁中广泛的语言差异,用他的话而言,有些差异“令人意外、与人们的认知相悖”(Biber, 1998, 178页)。Biber (2002, 133页)总结道“不同文本除了复杂程度各异之外,复杂性也体现在不同方面”,并且关于语言目的较早的论断“反映了我们对于语篇复杂度的语言特征片面的认知”(135页)。同样,Hyland (2004b, 2007) 也主张ESP教学和研究的学科特定性。其研究揭示了不同学科之间语言的修辞结构和语言特征的差异,此差异尤见于笔语。特定体裁的教学和研究需要考虑到此类差异(关于不同学科与职业体裁的语言特征请参考Hyland & Wong, 2019)。

ESP体裁研究

Bhatia (1993)列出了开展体裁分析(其特指笔语体裁)的步骤。此步骤并非要求研究者按照所有的步骤或者根据列出的顺序进行分析。第一步为收集所分析体裁的典型文本。Bhatia指出对于探究性研究随机选取几篇文本即可、对于详细分析选取一篇典型文本、对于分析文本的特征选取更多的篇数。下一步为考虑此特定体裁特征已知的知识。这些知识包括体裁的情境以及任何相关规约。针对此类信息,指南、手册或者实践经验都具有价值。期刊论文或者著作中对于某类体裁的分析研究也同样有用。接下来的步骤为完善体裁分析,分析方法为确定文本的作者、读者与两者之间的关系,即此类体裁的使用者、写作者、读者以及读者对于文本所起的作用。考虑文本的目标或者目的也同样重要。同样也需考虑体裁的典型语篇模式,即文本的典型结构、呈现的典型布局和格式、重复出现的语言特征。此外,还需考虑参与体裁构建所需的知识与文本所预设的世界观,即此类体裁预设或者展现的价值观、信念和假设。同样很重要的是考虑围绕此类体裁的文本网络以及写作或者阅读此类体裁文本所需的知识。还需要考虑的是学生写作中的体裁改动和体裁混合(Hyon, 2017)以及体裁学习迁移,即“学生将教学课程中的体裁知识应用于新的[写作]语境”(p.176)。

ESP中的体裁教学

体裁教学法的出现背景是写作教学中过程教学法(White & Arndt, 1991)的弊端,因教师和研究者们认为过程教学法未能涉及到具体写作任务的要求和个人写作场景的差异。同时过程教学法侧重个人意义构建,使学生误解学术写作的要求(Horowitz 1986)。然而,体裁教学法也同样存在争议。一个重要的争议是体裁教学(仅)推崇结果导向法,鼓励学习者在写作中寻找固定的结构和惯用语。Flowerdew (1993)提出在体裁教学中使用过程教学法时,体裁的模式不应该被当作固定的、有规则的结构,而是体裁的原型,应允许个人差异的存在。同时他也认为体裁教学应该包含对体裁的学习,而不仅是最终的文本或体裁的某种变体。Badger和White (2000)提出类似的观点,认为过程教学法和体裁教学法互为补充而非互斥,两者在语言学习中都发挥着作用。正如Johns (2008)所言,体裁教学需要关注体裁意识和体裁习得,即教师应该教授学习者一些策略来面对新的、不同的任务和情境(体裁意识),同时学习者也需要学习重要的体裁(体裁习得)。

一些学者(如Hammond & Mackin-Horarick,1999)认为体裁教学可以帮助学生获取到文本或者语篇,从而使他们可以更好地参与二语的口语与写作互动中。另外一些学者如Luke (1996)认为讲授体裁中的权力关系会导致对现状全盘照搬的复制,而未能提供我们所希望的寄予学习者的资源。然而Martin (1993)认为如果不讲授体裁中的权利关系,才是在社会互动层面的不负责任。因为如果不在课程中讲授,这些本已处在弱势地位的学生们将会更加弱势。反而,明确的体裁知识将会提供有用的资源以使他们在以后可以更好地参与体裁互动。这些体裁互动不仅发生在日常生活中,也发生在他们构想的工作、学习和日常生活中(Belcher, 2006)。
